About Dr. Deanne

Dr Deanne Soares is a Melbourne urologist specialising in robotic cancer surgery for prostate, kidney and bladder cancer.

She is known for a careful, considered approach to surgical decision-making — taking time to understand each patient's situation, explain their options honestly, and build a treatment plan that reflects both the cancer and the person. Patients often come to her at stressful and uncertain moments. She aims to make those consultations clear, thorough and practical, helping patients understand their diagnosis, the options available, and what each pathway is likely to involve.

She consults and operates at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne (public), Epworth Freemasons, Epworth Richmond, St Vincent's Private, John Fawkner Private, and the Australian Prostate Centre, and consults at Beleura Private Hospital on the Mornington Peninsula.

Clinical Focus

Dr Soares' surgical practice centres on robotic urological cancer surgery, including:

  • Robotic radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer

  • Robotic partial and total nephrectomy for kidney cancer

  • Robotic radical cystectomy for bladder cancer

  • Robotic nephroureterectomy for upper urinary tract cancer

  • Robotic pyeloplasty and ureteric re-implantation

Her approach is guided by careful judgement about what is most appropriate for the patient and the cancer being treated.

She also sees patients with elevated PSA, haematuria, kidney stones, benign prostate conditions and other urological concerns, and performs general urological procedures including TURP, UroLift and laser lithotripsy where appropriate.

Her practice does not routinely cover female pelvic floor disorders or complex recurrent urinary infections. Patients with these needs are referred to trusted colleagues who subspecialise in this area.

Training and Qualifications

Dr Soares completed her medical degree at the University of Notre Dame (Sydney and Melbourne), followed by dual Masters degrees in Surgery and in Health Leadership and Management from the University of Sydney and University of Wollongong respectively.

She completed specialist urology training in Victoria through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (SET programme), with rotations across Frankston Hospital, Monash Health, St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne, Launceston General Hospital, and a senior fellowship year at University Hospital Geelong — where she built her foundation in robotic urological technique across prostate, kidney and bladder surgery.

Following completion of her FRACS (Urology) in 2021, she undertook a dedicated one-year fellowship in robotic urologic cancer surgery at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, England (July 2022 – July 2023). Stepping Hill Hospital is a recognised robotic urology centre in Greater Manchester, with a consultant team focused on urological cancer surgery and robotic technique. The fellowship covered the full range of robotic urological cancer operations, with particular emphasis on oncological precision, nerve-sparing prostatectomy, and the management of high-risk and complex disease.

She is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Research and Publications

Dr Soares has presented at national and international urology conferences including the USANZ Annual Scientific Meeting, the European Association of Urology Conference (Amsterdam, 2022), and the Urological Association of Asia Congress. She was awarded the Keith Kirkland Award at the USANZ Annual Scientific Meeting in Brisbane (2019) — presented for the best podium presentation by a urology trainee at the national meeting — and received second prize for best registrar presentation at the USANZ VIC Meeting in 2018. She has published peer-reviewed research across urology and surgical medicine.

Leadership and Professional Contributions

Dr Soares has held national surgical leadership roles throughout her training and consultant career, including Chair of the Urology Trainee Forum, National Trainee Representative on the RACS Board of Urology, and Director of Communications at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Trainee Association. She currently serves on the USANZ Diversity and Inclusion Committee and is a member of the RACS Women in Surgery group. She mentors urology trainees and remains committed to improving diversity, inclusion and training standards within the specialty.
